Strength and Conditioning

As we age, our muscle quality and strength naturally deteriorates and without regular use and conditioning can cause significant decreases in function. In addition, bone health, joint stability and balance can be affected thereby increasing the risk of falls, pain disorders such as arthritis and bursitis, as well as osteoporosis which is associated with fractures. By participating in regular graded and specific strength training, it is never too late to start slowing down this processes, halting it or even regaining some of your former condition.

Disability Support

With recent changes to government disability support (NDIS), there is greater access to physiotherapy. This can provide a range of interventions including assessment and report writing for increased access to funds, manual therapy for physical limitations such as muscular contractures and pain, strengthening and reconditioning for muscle impairments, functional retraining for movement disorders and cognitive conditions, and general physical activity for cardiovascular health and wellbeing.

Aged Care

As we age, a general decline in mobility is often seen due to age related pain such as arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, reduced physical demands, increased fear of falling and lowered energy and motivation. This can result in a reduction in community engagement. Evidence shows that with a tailored program addressing pain management strategies, strengthening, balance training and capacity building exercises, our senior members of the community can regain their confidence and comfort and participate more fully in their daily life.

Functional Rehabilitation

An important role our physios play in home based rehabilitation is the ability to treat our clients’ functional goals and increase their independence. We have the advantage of applying therapy to the specific environment in which they will most likely require the skill or strength, thereby achieving a more specific and beneficial outcome. This allows us to retrain movement patterns in the exact area of daily life that may be presenting an issue for their independence. This can range from navigating an area of the garden, improving the required strength, balance and flexibility for self-care tasks like dressing and washing, establishing techniques for getting into and out of the car or shower, or maneuvering for comfort in the bed or chair. Our clients experience the advantage of being educated in the environment in which they will apply the skills learned, increasing the likelihood of a successful outcome.

Walking Aid Prescription and Equipment

Mobility aids such as a walking stick, walking frame or 4-wheeled walker can be very beneficial in increasing mobility and walking endurance, providing a stepping stone to regaining their mobility or providing a safety net to protect against falls. However, walking aids come in many varieties and as technology is constantly evolving, an expert eye in navigating the best piece of equipment can greatly help in making your choice. Taking the step to use a walking aid can be challenging to accept so a consultation with an expert can help with understanding the need and advantages to independence. We work with the client to ensure their goals are met by the equipment selected.

Neurological and Stroke Rehabilitation

Following a stroke or neurological event, such as an acquired brain injury or Guillain-Barre syndrome, or with the onset of neurological symptoms associated with conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s or Huntington’s Disease, physiotherapy involvement is critical. Physiotherapy can greatly assist in the maintenance and rehabilitation of muscle strength and coordination, provide movement strategies to increase independence and self-management techniques, as well as provide pain relief and guidance through recovery, where possible. The sooner physiotherapy rehabilitation is conducted the more effective it will be and in particular physiotherapy at home can provide the necessary consistency following discharge from inpatient rehabilitation.

Mobility Assessment and Retraining

Remaining mobile into older age is critical to maintain your wellbeing, increase independence, protect you from falls and improve or maintain your quality of life. Our team specialises in assessing and improving your mobility that may have declined due to age related changes, injury, pain or illness.

Falls Assessment / Prevention

As we age, the risk of falls becomes a defining factor in longevity and quality of life. Studies have shown a third of people over 65 years of age sustain a fall each year. Home Caring Physiotherapy specialises in assessing your risk of falls and working with you to minimise your risk and improve the factors that can lead to this.

Respiratory Conditioning

Conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) can result in shortness of breath on exertion, due to reduced airflow in the lungs. While the condition itself is irreversible, physiotherapy intervention can manage the symptoms experienced and help to maintain an improved quality of life.

Postoperative Care / Return From Hospital

Following surgery or sustained hospital stays, many patients experience a period of reduced mobility. Physiotherapy in the short term, postoperatively, is shown to have long term benefits in regaining your independence, function, strength and range of movement.

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is a wonderful way to rehabilitate with reduced weight-bearing on injured or impaired limbs. Hydrotherapy can also provide a stepping stone or method for exercising for those who lack the strength to perform land-based exercises.
